Microsoft has released Skype for Mac 7.0 and Skype for Windows 7.0 Beta, unveiling a major redesign of its Skype desktop client in the process.

Skype 7.16.0.102 Released: Add info Size: 43.19 MB Downloads: 3 Rating: Tested: Free from spyware, adware and viruses. Download older versions of Skype for Mac. All of the older versions of Skype have no viruses and are totally free on Uptodown. 8.21.0.7 May 17th, 2018.

Version 7.0’s new design mirrors closely that found on Skype’s mobile platforms, and is designed to provide users with a more unified experience across all devices they use it on.

The most visible change is that photos now appear inline as large thumbnails as soon as they’ve been sent. The Windows version also increases the spacing between contacts and chats, and offers message previews for unread chats to make following multiple conversations simpler.

Users can now combine IM conversations with voice and video chats in Skype’s latest desktop build.

Users should also notice that certain file types – specifically Office documents and PDF files – are now displayed using file icons to make them simpler to pick out when scrolling through a chat history.

Skype also introduces a new dual-paned view that allows users to continue using the IM feature while engaged in a voice or video call, making it easier to share photos and other files during the call. Mac users can access this view via a single click.

Finally, the group video chat feature – recently made available for free to all Skype users – has also been redesigned to make it easier to use.

Skype for Mac 7.0 and Skype for Windows 7.0 Beta are both available now as freeware downloads. Also available are Skype for iPhone, Skype for iPad, Skype for Android and Skype for Windows 8.

Skype took to its blog yesterday to introduce Skype for Mac 7.0 and a preview of the newest Skype for Windows version, both of which chiefly feature a redesign intended to further unified all the Skype products. The new design drags in design elements familiar to the mobile version, providing a more consistent Skyping experience regardless of which version you’re using in the moment. This follows the Skype for Fire Phone version that rolled out this past summer for Amazon’s new smartphone.

Though Skype is best known for the phone service it offers, the software also includes a chat feature, which the company says it has been hard at work improving. For desktop users, chat users can share photos that “show up as you’d expect,” with Windows users in particular seeing more space betwixt both chats and contacts.

Also for the Windows version of chat is unread chat message previews, which Skype says improves the simplicity of following conversations. Sharing files other than images has also been improved, including display icons for increase ease in hunting down shared items in past chats.

Joining these chat improvements is a design change that places chat and video calls side-by-side when they’re happening at the same time — a usability improvement, making things simpler. Rounding this out is improvements to free group video calls via the design tweaks.
