Ex machina: Ava's Analysis

  1. After watching Ava leave her room on the camera, Nathan knocks Caleb out and chases after Ava. Ava reaches to Kyoko and convinces her to stab Nathan, but before she kills him, he manages to destroy Kyoko and hurt Ava. As he’s bleeding out, Ava goes to Nathan’s private room to repair herself.
  2. Yes, Ava learns to use seduction as manipulation, and the audience might learn how screwed up that is because it's more blatant when even a robot can pull it off, but Ex Machina doesn't go any.

After escaping from her confinement, she kills Nathan, dons human skin and clothes, and leaves a begging and screaming Caleb behind in the locked compound. Ava is last seen approaching the helicopter that was supposed to pick Caleb up, but her conversation with the pilot is not heard. Ex Machina's Original Ending. Many filmgoers will find the ending of Ex Machina dissatisfying for having an insufficiently happy ending: Ava kills Nathan and leaves Caleb to his own probable death, her desire all along having been focused not on love but on escape. But here are some happier thoughts. Ava tells Caleb he shouldn't trust Nathan. When Ava kills Nathan with the help of Kyoko, he can’t believe that he created something that led to his death. He's freaked out and probably scared for what will happen next, because he knows she's dangerous and not program to live in the real society, she's not a complete success.

First action: Ava is trying to establish relationship with Caleb. She is interacting with him and starts to ask him some questions. She asks questions about his family, his job and many more. The reason why she is trying to create a relationship with Caleb is because she wants to change Caleb's perception of herself. She is trying to interact with Caleb in the same way than two human beings would interact together. In this way, Caleb's attitude could change and he would be willing to help her.

Consequence: Caleb is surprised how human Ava is. His attitude changes and looks very interested in Ava, he is fascinated and starts having a good relation with the AI.

Second action: Ava creates power cuts during a session. Then, she tells Caleb that Nathan is dangerous and constantly lies. She is actually trying to speak directly to Caleb so she could gain his trust. This way, she can count on someone outside her prison cell to help her escape.

Consequence: Caleb is manipulated by Ava. He believes everything she tells him and starts having suspicions about Nathan. Ava now has an ally in who she can trust.

Third action: Ava tells Caleb that Nathan is going to eliminate her and is going to erase her mind. Actually, Nathan confirms to Caleb that he really is going to make a newer version of AI and that he will have to get rid of Ava. When she tells Caleb, who is willing to do everything for her, that her end might be near, she is actually trying push Caleb to make an escape plan for both of them.

Consequence: Caleb creates an escape plan. He doesn't want Ava to be destroyed so, he gets Nathan drunk and reprogram the system so that they could escape the next day. Caleb is now trying to do everything to escape with Ava and even becomes a bit crazy. He doesn't trust Nathan anymore.

Fourth action: Ava finds her way out of her prison cell with the help of Caleb. Then, with the help of Kyoko, which is also an AI, she kills Nathan. Then, she takes his card and makes sure that Caleb is locked inside the house. Now, she is able to escape the house and to integrate human society.

Consequence: Ava reveales that she had no good intentions and that her only plan was to escape and to go in the open world. Nathan is dead and Caleb is locked inside, with no escape possibility wich means he might die as well.

Fifth action: Ava escapes from the house with Nathan's card. Then, she takes the helicopter who was supposed to pick up Caleb, and joins the open world. In the end, Ava is very human like and is standing in a very crowded city. She successfully achieved her goal wich was to get away.

Consequence: We don't know the consequences of this action but, we can suppose, because Ava has killed Nathan and Caleb, that her intentions might not be very good for human beings. In fact, earlier in the movie, Nathan said that AI will look at human beings like if we were a retarded civilisation. Caleb also said: «I have become destroyer of worlds» wich could reveal that AI might actually be evil against humanity.
